Blimey, the Bisopsgate bomb.
I've just seen the aftermath pictures on the BBC. I'll hold my hands up , I didn't realise how fierce it was. How only one person died is beyond belief .

Re: Blimey, the Bisopsgate bomb.
I was on my way home from the previous night out and got a cab from London Bridge to Liverpool Street. Cab stopped at the lights on Bishopsgate by London Wall and I wondered why there was this lorry parked on the wrong side of the road so close to the junction. Thought no more about it and got on the train back to Romford.

I'd just got in when I got a phone call to say there had been a bomb in the city as I often used to work up there on a Saturday.

Turned on the news and when they said where it was I worked out why the lorry was there.

Re: Blimey, the Bisopsgate bomb.
The Ira had given a coded message and the police knew where the lorry was parked. The one casualty was a journalist who wanted to take the last picture, he ignored the warnings, we found him about 50 yards from the explosion remarkably intact.

Cost the City billions they recon. Who remembers the security cordons? The City was becoming a no go zone. Foreign investors getting nervous.

Good strategy from the IRA to hurt the economy. resulted in Major getting around the table.

Who says terrorism doesn't work? Ditto Israel.

Remember it well lived in Bethnal green at the time . The noise was unbelievable .saying that in the 80s and 90s hearing a bomb explode was all too familiar.

The fella that killed was a news of the world cameraman, he jumped the fire brigade barrier to get a decent shot, that old square glass that you used to see on the pavement came up and cut him in half

I was finance officer at the MoD for bomb disposal equipment (amongst other things) at the time and that bomb was huge.
The circumstances around that explosion didn't reflect well on the MET either.
